因此,在這個翻譯系列中,我們採用 “Essentially Literal” Translation(實質直譯/盡量貼近原文的翻譯方式)。

Hebrew、Aramaic、

本篇先從 Talmud 學習的基礎文本——Mishnah Berakhot(מסכת ברכות,《祝福篇》)開始。

Mishnah 1

Essentially Literal English

From when do they recite the Shema in the evening?

From the hour when the priests enter to eat of their terumah, until the end of the first watch — the words of Rabbi Eliezer.

And the Sages say: until midnight.

Rabban Gamliel says: until the pillar of dawn rises.

It happened that his sons came from the house of a banquet.

They said to him, “We have not recited the Shema.”

He said to them, “If the pillar of dawn has not risen, you are obligated to recite.”

And not this alone; rather, everything concerning which the Sages said “until midnight,” its commandment extends until the pillar of dawn rises.

The burning of the fats and the limbs — their commandment extends until the pillar of dawn rises.

And all things that are eaten for one day — their commandment extends until the pillar of dawn rises.

If so, why did the Sages say, “until midnight”?

In order to distance the person from transgression.

Shema?

Rabban Gamliel

Mishnah 2

Essentially Literal English

From when do they recite the Shema in the morning?

From when one can distinguish between blue and white.

Rabbi Eliezer says: between blue and leek-green.

And one finishes it by sunrise.

Rabbi Yehoshua says: until three hours, for such is the way of sons of kings — to rise at three hours.

One who recites from this point onward has not lost, like a person who reads in the Torah.

Shema?

Rabbi Eliezer

Rabbi Yehoshua

Essentially Literal English

The House of Shammai say:

In the evening every person should recline and recite, and in the morning they should stand, for it is said: “when you lie down and when you rise.”

And the House of Hillel say:

Every person recites according to his way, for it is said: “and when you walk on the way.”

If so, why is it said, “when you lie down and when you rise”?

At the hour when human beings lie down, and at the hour when human beings rise.

Rabbi Tarfon said:

“I was coming on the way, and I reclined to recite according to the words of the House of Shammai, and I endangered myself because of robbers.”

They said to him:

“You were worthy to incur guilt against yourself, because you transgressed the words of the House of Hillel.”

Shammai

Hillel

Rabbi Tarfon

Essentially Literal English

In the morning one blesses two before it and one after it; and in the evening, two before it and two after it — one long and one short.

Where they said to lengthen, one is not permitted to shorten.

Where they said to shorten, one is not permitted to lengthen.

Where they said to conclude, one is not permitted not to conclude.

And where they said not to conclude, one is not permitted to conclude.

Mishnah 5

Essentially Literal English

They mention the Exodus from Egypt at night.

Rabbi Elazar ben Azariah said:

“Behold, I am like a man seventy years old, and I did not merit that the Exodus from Egypt should be said at night until Ben Zoma expounded it.

For it is said:

‘In order that you remember the day of your going out from the land of Egypt all the days of your life.’

‘The days of your life’ — the days.

‘All the days of your life’ — the nights.”

And the Sages say:

“The days of your life” — this world.

“All the days of your life” — to bring in the days of the Messiah.

Rabbi Elazar ben Azariah

Chapter 2

第二章

Mishnah 1

Essentially Literal English

If one was reading in the Torah, and the time for the recitation arrived, if he directed his heart, he fulfilled his obligation.

And if not, he did not fulfill it.

Between the sections he may greet because of honor and answer; and in the middle he may greet because of fear and answer — the words of Rabbi Meir.

Rabbi Yehudah says:

In the middle he may greet because of fear and answer because of honor; between the sections he may greet because of honor and return a greeting to every person.

Rabbi Yehudah

Mishnah 2

Essentially Literal English

These are “between the sections”:

between the first blessing and the second;

between the second and the Shema;

between Shema and “And it shall be, if you surely hear”;

between “And it shall be, if you surely hear” and “And YHWH said”;

between “And YHWH said” and “True and firm.”

Rabbi Yehudah says:

Between “And YHWH said” and “True and firm,” he shall not interrupt.

Rabbi Yehoshua ben Korḥah said:

Why did Shema precede “And it shall be, if you surely hear”?

So that he may first accept upon himself the yoke of the kingdom of Heaven, and afterward accept upon himself the yoke of the commandments.

“And it shall be, if you surely hear” precedes “And YHWH said,” because “And it shall be, if you surely hear” applies by day and by night, whereas “And YHWH said” applies only by day.

第一個祝福與第二個祝福之間;

第二個祝福與 Shema 之間;

Shema 與「事情若是這樣,你們確實聽從」之間;

「事情若是這樣,你們確實聽從」與「YHWH 說」之間;

Rabbi Yehudah

Rabbi Yehoshua ben Korḥah

Mishnah 7

Essentially Literal English

If they brought before him salty food first and bread with it, he blesses over the salty food and exempts the bread, because the bread is subordinate to it.

This is the rule:

Whenever there is a principal food and with it a subordinate food, he blesses over the principal and exempts the subordinate.

Essentially Literal English

How do they make the zimmun?

With three, he says:

“Let us bless.”

With three besides himself, he says:

“Bless.”

With ten, he says:

“Let us bless our God.”

With ten besides himself, he says:

“Bless.”

The same whether ten or ten myriads.

With one hundred he says:

“Let us bless YHWH our God.”

With one hundred besides himself, he says:

“Bless.”

With one thousand he says:

“Let us bless YHWH our God, the God of Israel.”

With one thousand besides himself, he says:

“Bless.”

With ten thousand he says:

“Let us bless YHWH our God, the God of Israel, the God of Hosts, who sits upon the cherubim, for the food that we have eaten.”

With ten thousand besides himself, he says:

“Bless.”

In the manner in which he blesses, so they answer after him:

“Blessed is YHWH our God, the God of Israel, the God of Hosts, who sits upon the cherubim, for the food that we have eaten.”

Rabbi Yose the Galilean says:

According to the multitude of the congregation do they bless, for it is said:

“In assemblies bless God, YHWH, from the source of Israel.”

Rabbi Akiva said:

What do we find in the synagogue?

Whether many or few, he says:

“Bless YHWH.”

Rabbi Yishmael says:

“Bless YHWH, the Blessed.”

Rabbi Yose the Galilean

Rabbi Akiva

Rabbi Yishmael

One who sees the Great Sea says:

“Blessed is the Good One who does good.”

And over bad reports one says:

Mishnah 3

Essentially Literal English

If one built a new house or acquired new vessels, he says:

“Blessed is He who has kept us alive.”

One blesses over evil even when something of good may come from it, and over good even when something of evil may come from it.

One who cries out concerning what has already happened — this is a prayer in vain.

How so?

If his wife was pregnant and he said:

“May it be Your will that my wife give birth to a male,”

this is a prayer in vain.

If he was coming on the way and heard the sound of crying out in the city, and said:

“May it be Your will that these are not members of my household,”

this is a prayer in vain.

Mishnah 5

Essentially Literal English

A person is obligated to bless over the evil just as he blesses over the good, for it is said:

“And you shall love YHWH your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might.”

“With all your heart” —

with your two inclinations:

with the good inclination and with the evil inclination.

“And with all your soul” —

even if He takes your soul.

“And with all your might” —

with all your wealth.

Another interpretation:

“With all your might” —

with every measure and measure that He measures out to you, be exceedingly thankful to Him.

A person shall not behave frivolously opposite the Eastern Gate, for it is directed opposite the House of the Holy of Holies.

One shall not enter the Temple Mount with his staff, with his shoes, with his money-belt, or with dust upon his feet.

And he shall not make it a shortcut.

And spitting is forbidden by an argument from the lesser to the greater.

All those concluding blessings that were in the Temple used to say:

“From the world.”

When the sectarians corrupted matters and said:

“There is only one world,”

they instituted that they should say:

“From the world and unto the world.”

And they instituted that a person should ask after the welfare of his fellow using the Name, for it is said:

“And behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem, and he said to the reapers, ‘YHWH be with you,’ and they said to him, ‘May YHWH bless you.’”

And it says:

“YHWH is with you, mighty man of valor.”

And it says:

“Do not despise your mother when she has grown old.”

And it says:

“It is a time to act for YHWH; they have broken Your Torah.”

Rabbi Nathan says:

“They have broken Your Torah — it is a time to act for YHWH.”

Rabbi Nathan
