Mishnah Sheviit(מסכת שביעית,《第七年篇》)之後,Seder Zeraim(סדר זרעים)的下一個 tractate 是 Mishnah Terumot(מסכת תרומות,《奉獻物篇》)。

Terumot(תרומות)是 terumah(תרומה)的複數形式。

Even with permission, his terumah is not terumah.

Hillel

Mishnah 5

Essentially Literal English

Five shall not separate terumah; and if they separated it, their terumah is terumah:

The mute person, the intoxicated person, the naked person, the blind person, and one who has had a seminal emission.

They shall not separate terumah; and if they separated it, their terumah is terumah.

不可使用本身就是固定量器的籃子或容器來分;

Mishnah 8

Essentially Literal English

They do not separate oil for olives that are being crushed, nor wine for grapes that are being pressed.

And if he separated, his terumah is terumah, and he shall return and separate again.

The first, by itself, renders a mixture medumma, and one is liable for the additional fifth on account of it;

but not the second.

Mishnah 9

Essentially Literal English

如果一個人原本為了食用而處理農作物,因此用油替食用橄欖分 terumah、用橄欖替食用橄欖分、用葡萄酒替食用葡萄分,或用葡萄替食用葡萄分;

Mishnah 10

And if they did separate, their terumah is terumah.

不可從已完成農產品處理程序的東西中分 terumah,來涵蓋尚未完成處理程序的;

也不可從尚未完成的分出,來涵蓋已完成的;

Chapter 2

第二章

Mishnah 1

Essentially Literal English

They do not separate terumah from pure produce for impure produce.

And if they did separate, their terumah is terumah.

In truth they said:

A cake of dried figs, part of which became impure — he separates from the pure part within it for the impure part within it.

And likewise a bundle of vegetables, and likewise a heap.

If there were two cakes, two bundles, or two heaps, one impure and one pure, he shall not separate from this for that.

Rabbi Eliezer says:

They may separate from the pure for the impure.

Rabbi Eliezer

Mishnah 2

Essentially Literal English

They do not separate terumah from the impure for the pure.

If he separated unintentionally, his terumah is terumah.

If intentionally, he has done nothing.

And likewise a Levite who had tithe that was still tevel and continued separating from it:

If unintentionally, what he did is done.

If intentionally, he has done nothing.

Rabbi Yehudah says:

If he knew of its condition at the beginning, even though he acted unintentionally, he has done nothing.

Rabbi Yehudah

Mishnah 3

Essentially Literal English

One who immerses utensils on Shabbat:

If unintentionally, he may use them.

If intentionally, he may not use them.

One who tithes or cooks on Shabbat:

If unintentionally, it may be eaten.

If intentionally, it may not be eaten.

One who plants on Shabbat:

If unintentionally, he may maintain it.

If intentionally, he shall uproot it.

But in the seventh year, whether unintentionally or intentionally, he shall uproot it.

Mishnah 4

Essentially Literal English

They do not separate terumah from one species for another species.

And if he did separate, his terumah is not terumah.

All kinds of wheat are one species.

All kinds of figs, dried figs, and cakes of dried figs are one species.

And he may separate from one for another.

Wherever there is a Kohen, he separates from the better produce.

Wherever there is no Kohen, he separates from that which keeps.

Rabbi Yehudah says:

He always separates from the better produce.

Rabbi Yehudah

Mishnah 5

Essentially Literal English

They separate a whole small onion, and not half of a large onion.

Rabbi Yehudah says:

Not so, but rather half of a large onion.

And Rabbi Yehudah likewise used to say:

They separate onions of the townspeople for the village onions, but not village onions for those of the townspeople, because it is food of the polytikin.

Rabbi Yehudah

Rabbi Yehudah 又說:

可以用城裡人的洋蔥替鄉村洋蔥分 terumah;

Mishnah 6

Essentially Literal English

They separate oil-olives for preserved olives, but not preserved olives for oil-olives.

And unboiled wine for boiled wine, but not boiled wine for unboiled wine.

This is the rule:

Anything that is kilayim with another may not be separated as terumah from one for the other, even from the better for the inferior.

Anything that is not kilayim with another may be separated from the better for the inferior, but not from the inferior for the better.

And if he separated from the inferior for the better, his terumah is terumah,

except for zunin for wheat, because zunin are not food.

Kishut and melafefon are one species.

Rabbi Yehudah says:

Two species.

可以用榨油用的橄欖替醃製用的橄欖分 terumah;

可以用沒有煮過的葡萄酒替煮過的葡萄酒分;

如果已經用較差的替較好的分了,所分出的 terumah 仍有效;

Rabbi Yehudah 說:

Chapter 3

第三章

Mishnah 1

Essentially Literal English

One who separates a kishut and it is found bitter, or a melon and it is found spoiled:

It is terumah, and he shall return and separate again.

One who separated from a barrel of wine and it was found to be vinegar:

If it is known that it had already become vinegar before he separated, it is not terumah.

If it became vinegar after he separated, it is terumah.

If there is doubt, it is terumah, and he shall return and separate again.

The first does not by itself render a mixture medumma, and one is not liable for the additional fifth on account of it.

And likewise the second.

一個人分出 kishut 作 terumah,後來發現它是苦的;

Mishnah 2

Essentially Literal English

If one of them fell into ḥullin, it does not render them medumma.

If the second fell into another place, it does not render them medumma.

If both fell into one place, they render it medumma according to the smaller of the two.

Mishnah 3

Essentially Literal English

Partners who separated terumah one after another:

Rabbi Akiva says:

The terumah of both is terumah.

And the Sages say:

The terumah of the first is terumah.

Rabbi Yose says:

If the first separated the proper measure, the terumah of the second is not terumah.

If the first did not separate the proper measure, the terumah of the second is terumah.

Rabbi Akiva

Rabbi Yose

Mishnah 4

Essentially Literal English

When are these words said?

When he gave no instruction.

But if he authorized a member of his household, his male servant, or his female servant to separate terumah, that person’s terumah is terumah.

If he canceled the authorization:

If he canceled it before the terumah was separated, the terumah is not terumah.

If he canceled it after it was separated, the terumah is terumah.

Workers do not have authority to separate terumah, except those who tread the grapes, because they can render the winepress impure immediately.

一般工人沒有權力自行分 terumah;

Mishnah 5

Essentially Literal English

One who says:

“The terumah of this heap is within it, and its tithes are within it; the terumat ma’aser of this is within it” —

Rabbi Shimon says:

He has designated it by name.

And the Sages say:

Not until he says, “in its north” or “in its south.”

Rabbi Elazar Hisma says:

One who says, “The terumah of this heap is from it and for it,” has designated it by name.

Rabbi Eliezer ben Yaakov says:

One who says, “One-tenth of this tithe is made terumat ma’aser for it,” has designated it by name.

Rabbi Shimon

Rabbi Elazar Hisma

Rabbi Eliezer ben Yaakov

Mishnah 6

Essentially Literal English

One who gives precedence to terumah before first fruits, first tithe before terumah, or second tithe before first tithe:

Although he transgresses a negative commandment, what he did is done,

for it is said:

“You shall not delay your fullness and your outflow.”

一個人如果把 terumah 放在 first fruits 以前;

把 first tithe 放在 terumah 以前;

或把 second tithe 放在 first tithe 以前:

Mishnah 7

Essentially Literal English

And from where is it known that first fruits precede terumah?

This is called “terumah” and “first,” and that is called “terumah” and “first.”

Rather, first fruits shall precede, because they are first fruits of all.

And terumah precedes first tithe, because it is “first.”

And first tithe precedes second tithe, because there is a “first” within it.

這一個被稱為「terumah」與「first」;

Terumah 應當先於 first tithe,因為它本身被稱為「first」。

First tithe 又先於 second tithe,因為 first tithe 裡面還包含一個「first」的部分。

Mishnah 8

Essentially Literal English

One who intended to say “terumah” and said “tithe,” or “tithe” and said “terumah”;

“burnt offering” and said “peace offering,” or “peace offering” and said “burnt offering”;

“I will not enter this house” and said it of that one;

“I will not derive benefit from this person” and said it of that one —

he has said nothing,

until his mouth and his heart are alike.

一個人心裡想說「terumah」,口中卻說成「tithe」;

想說「tithe」,卻說成「terumah」;

想說「burnt offering」,卻說成「peace offering」;

想說「peace offering」,卻說成「burnt offering」;

想說「我不進這一間房子」,卻說成另一間;

Mishnah 9

Essentially Literal English

The terumah of a gentile and of a Samaritan is terumah;

their tithes are tithe;

and what they consecrate is consecrated.

Rabbi Yehudah says:

A gentile does not have the law of a fourth-year vineyard.

And the Sages say:

He does.

The terumah of a gentile renders a mixture medumma, and one is liable for the additional fifth on account of it.

Rabbi Shimon exempts.

外族人與 Samaritan 所分出的 terumah,具有 terumah 地位;

他們所分出的 tithes 具有 tithe 地位;

Rabbi Yehudah

外族人所分出的 terumah,如果混入普通食物,會使混合物成為 medumma;

Rabbi Shimon

Chapter 4

第四章

Mishnah 1

Essentially Literal English

One who separated part of the terumah and tithes may separate from it terumah for itself, but not for another place.

Rabbi Meir says:

He may even separate from it terumah and tithes for another place.

可以再從這批農作物本身分出 terumah,來完成它自己的義務;

Rabbi Meir

Mishnah 2

Essentially Literal English

One whose produce was in a storehouse, and he gave a seah to a Levite and a seah to a poor person:

He may continue separating and eating up to eight seahs —

the words of Rabbi Meir.

And the Sages say:

He separates only according to the calculation.

Rabbi Meir

Mishnah 3

Essentially Literal English

The measure of terumah:

A generous eye — one out of forty.

The House of Shammai say:

One out of thirty.

The average — one out of fifty.

The poor eye — one out of sixty.

If he separated and there came into his hand one out of sixty, it is terumah, and he need not separate again.

If he returned and added, the addition is obligated in tithes.

If there came into his hand one out of sixty-one, it is terumah, and he shall return and separate according to what he is accustomed to, by measure, weight, or number.

Rabbi Yehudah says:

Even when it is not from produce gathered together nearby.

Terumah

Shammai

如果實際只分出六十一分之一,這部分仍是 terumah;

Rabbi Yehudah

Mishnah 4

Essentially Literal English

One who says to his agent:

“Go and separate terumah” —

he separates according to the intention of the owner.

If he does not know the intention of the owner, he separates according to the average measure, one out of fifty.

If he reduced by ten or added ten, his terumah is terumah.

If he intended to add even one beyond that, his terumah is not terumah.

Mishnah 5

Essentially Literal English

One who gives an excessive amount as terumah:

Rabbi Eliezer says:

Up to one out of ten, like terumat ma’aser.

More than this, he shall make the excess terumat ma’aser for another place.

Rabbi Yishmael says:

Half is ḥullin and half is terumah.

Rabbi Tarfon and Rabbi Akiva say:

Up to the point that he leaves some ḥullin there.

Rabbi Eliezer

Rabbi Yishmael

Essentially Literal English

At three periods they estimate the basket:

One who counts is praiseworthy.

One who measures is more praiseworthy than he.

One who weighs is the most praiseworthy of the three.

Essentially Literal English

Rabbi Eliezer says:

Terumah is nullified in one hundred and one.

Rabbi Yehoshua says:

In one hundred and something more.

And this “something more” has no fixed measure.

Rabbi Yose ben Meshullam says:

The “something more” is a kav for one hundred seahs — one-sixth of the amount that renders medumma.

Rabbi Eliezer 說:

Terumah

Rabbi Yehoshua

Rabbi Yose ben Meshullam

Mishnah 8

Essentially Literal English

Rabbi Yehoshua says:

Black figs can combine to permit the white ones, and white ones can combine to permit the black ones.

Large cakes of dried figs can combine to permit the small ones, and the small can combine to permit the large.

Round cakes can combine to permit rectangular cakes, and rectangular cakes can combine to permit the round.

Rabbi Eliezer forbids.

Rabbi Akiva says:

When it is known what fell, they do not combine with one another to permit.

When it is not known what fell, they combine with one another to permit.

Rabbi Yehoshua 說:

黑色無花果可以與白色無花果一起計入總量,使白色的解除限制;

Rabbi Eliezer

Rabbi Akiva

Mishnah 9

Essentially Literal English

How so?

Fifty black figs and fifty white figs:

If a black terumah fig fell among them, the black ones are forbidden and the white ones are permitted.

If a white one fell, the white ones are forbidden and the black ones are permitted.

When it is not known what fell, they combine with one another to permit.

In this case Rabbi Eliezer is stringent, and Rabbi Yehoshua is lenient.

Mishnah 10

Essentially Literal English

And in this case Rabbi Eliezer is lenient, and Rabbi Yehoshua is stringent:

One pressed a litra of dried figs onto the mouth of one of the jars and does not know which one.

Rabbi Eliezer says:

They view them as though they were separated, and those below combine to permit those above.

Rabbi Yehoshua says:

It is not permitted until there are one hundred jars there.

Rabbi Eliezer

Rabbi Yehoshua

Mishnah 11

Essentially Literal English

A seah of terumah that fell upon the top of a storehouse and settled there:

Rabbi Eliezer says:

If there are one hundred seahs in the upper layer, it is permitted in one hundred and one.

Rabbi Yehoshua says:

It is not permitted.

A seah of terumah that fell upon the top of a storehouse — he shall remove the upper layer.

If so, why did they say that terumah is permitted in one hundred and one?

When it is not known whether they were mixed, or where it fell.

Rabbi Eliezer

Rabbi Yehoshua

Mishnah 12

Essentially Literal English

Two baskets or two storehouses, when a seah of terumah fell into one of them and it is not known into which it fell, combine with one another to permit.

Rabbi Shimon says:

Even if they are in two towns, they combine with one another to permit.

Rabbi Shimon

Mishnah 13

Essentially Literal English

Rabbi Yose said:

A case came before Rabbi Akiva concerning fifty bundles of vegetables, into which one bundle fell that was half terumah.

And I said before him:

“It is permitted.”

Not because terumah is permitted in fifty-one, but because there were there one hundred and two halves.

Rabbi Yose

Chapter 5

第五章

Mishnah 1

Essentially Literal English

A seah of impure terumah that fell into fewer than one hundred seahs of ḥullin, or into first tithe, second tithe, or consecrated property, whether they were impure or pure, shall be left to decay.

If that seah of terumah was pure, the mixture is sold to Kohanim at the price of terumah, excluding the value of that one seah.

If it fell into first tithe, he designates terumat ma’aser.

If it fell into second tithe or consecrated property, these are redeemed.

If the ḥullin were impure, they are eaten as small loaves (nikudim) or roasted grain, or kneaded with fruit juice, or divided into dough portions, so that there shall not be an egg-sized amount in one place.

如果那些 ḥullin 本身是不潔淨的,就把它們製成小塊麵餅(nikudim)或烤穀物來吃;

或用果汁和麵;

Mishnah 2

Essentially Literal English

A seah of impure terumah that fell into one hundred seahs of pure ḥullin:

Rabbi Eliezer says:

One seah shall be taken up and burned, for I say that the seah that fell is the seah that came up.

And the Sages say:

One seah is taken up, and the remainder is eaten as small loaves (nikudim) or roasted grain, or kneaded with fruit juice, or divided into dough portions, so that there shall not be an egg-sized amount in one place.

Rabbi Eliezer

取出一個 seah 之後,其餘可以製成小塊麵餅(nikudim)或烤穀物食用;

也可以用果汁和麵;

Mishnah 3

Mishnah 4

Essentially Literal English

A seah of impure terumah that fell into one hundred seahs of pure terumah:

The House of Shammai forbid, and the House of Hillel permit.

The House of Hillel said to the House of Shammai:

Since pure terumah is forbidden to non-Kohanim and impure terumah is forbidden to Kohanim, just as pure terumah may be nullified, so impure terumah should be nullified.

The House of Shammai said to them:

No.

If the lenient ḥullin, which are permitted to non-Kohanim, can nullify pure terumah, shall stringent terumah, which is forbidden to non-Kohanim, nullify impure terumah?

After they agreed:

Rabbi Eliezer says:

One seah shall be taken up and burned.

And the Sages say:

It is lost in its minority.

Shammai 學派禁止;

Hillel

純潔 terumah 對非 Kohen 禁止;

Shammai

Rabbi Eliezer

Mishnah 5

Essentially Literal English

A seah of terumah fell into one hundred seahs; he took one seah up, and it fell into another place.

Rabbi Eliezer says:

It renders the second mixture medumma as certain terumah.

And the Sages say:

It renders it medumma only according to the proportion.

Rabbi Eliezer

Mishnah 6

Essentially Literal English

A seah of terumah fell into fewer than one hundred seahs and they became medumma, and some of the medumma fell into another place.

Rabbi Eliezer says:

It renders the second mixture medumma as certain terumah.

And the Sages say:

Medumma renders another mixture medumma only according to its proportion;

a leavened mixture causes leavening only according to its proportion;

and drawn water invalidates a mikveh only according to its proportion.

Rabbi Eliezer

Mishnah 7

Essentially Literal English

A seah of terumah fell into one hundred seahs.

He took one seah up, and another seah of terumah fell in.

He took one seah up, and another fell in.

The mixture remains permitted until the terumah becomes greater than the ḥullin.

Mishnah 8

Essentially Literal English

Essentially Literal English

A seah of terumah fell into one hundred seahs, and they ground them and the amount decreased:

Just as the ḥullin decreased, so the terumah decreased, and it is permitted.

A seah of terumah fell into fewer than one hundred seahs, and they ground them and the amount increased:

Just as the ḥullin increased, so the terumah increased, and it is forbidden.

If it is known that the wheat of the ḥullin was better than that of the terumah, it is permitted.

A seah of terumah fell into fewer than one hundred seahs, and afterward ḥullin fell there:

If unintentionally, it is permitted.

If intentionally, it is forbidden.

Chapter 6

第六章

Mishnah 1

Essentially Literal English

One who eats terumah unintentionally pays the principal and an additional fifth.

Whether one eats, drinks, or anoints himself;

whether the terumah was pure or impure;

he pays its fifth, and a fifth of its fifth.

He does not make repayment with terumah, but with properly tithed ḥullin, and they become terumah.

The repayment itself is terumah.

If the Kohen wished to waive it, he may not waive it.

不論是吃、喝,或拿它塗身;

不論是純潔 terumah 或不潔淨 terumah;

Mishnah 2

Essentially Literal English

An Israelite woman who ate terumah and afterward married a Kohen:

If she ate terumah in which no Kohen had yet acquired rights, she pays the principal and the additional fifth to herself.

If she ate terumah in which a Kohen had acquired rights, she pays the principal to the owner and the fifth to herself.

For they said:

One who eats terumah unintentionally pays the principal to the owner, and the fifth to whichever Kohen he wishes.

Kohen:

一個人無意中吃 terumah,本金要補給擁有 terumah 的人;

Mishnah 3

Essentially Literal English

One who fed terumah to his workers or his guests:

He pays the principal, and they pay the additional fifth —

the words of Rabbi Meir.

And the Sages say:

They pay the principal and the fifth, and he pays them the value of their meal.

Rabbi Meir 說:

提供食物的人償還本金;

實際吃的人償還本金與額外五分之一;

Mishnah 4

Essentially Literal English

One who steals terumah and does not eat it pays double according to the value of terumah.

If he ate it, he pays two principals and an additional fifth:

One principal and the fifth from ḥullin, and one principal according to the monetary value of terumah.

If he stole terumah belonging to consecrated property and ate it, he pays two fifths and one principal, because consecrated property does not have double payment.

其中一份本金與額外五分之一,用 ḥullin 補償;

如果偷的是屬於 consecrated property 的 terumah,而且又把它吃掉,就支付一份本金與兩份額外五分之一;

Mishnah 5

Essentially Literal English

They do not make repayment from leket, shikheḥah, peah, or ownerless produce;

nor from first tithe from which its terumah has been taken;

nor from second tithe or consecrated property that has been redeemed,

because consecrated property does not redeem consecrated property —

the words of Rabbi Meir.

And the Sages permit with these.

不可使用 leket、shikheḥah、peah 或無主農作物作 terumah 的補償;

也不可使用已經取走其 terumah 的 first tithe;

Mishnah 6

Essentially Literal English

Rabbi Eliezer says:

Repayment may be made from one species for another, provided that he pays from the better for the inferior.

Rabbi Akiva says:

Repayment is made only from the same species for the same species.

Therefore, if he ate kishut from the eve of the seventh year, he shall wait for kishut from after the seventh year and repay from them.

From the very place where Rabbi Eliezer is lenient, Rabbi Akiva is stringent, for it is said:

“And he shall give to the Kohen the holy thing.”

Rabbi Eliezer says:

Anything fit to become holy.

Rabbi Akiva says:

“And he shall give to the Kohen the holy thing” —

the holy thing that he ate.

Rabbi Eliezer

Rabbi Akiva

Rabbi Eliezer

Rabbi Akiva

Chapter 7

第七章

Mishnah 1

Essentially Literal English

One who eats terumah intentionally pays the principal and does not pay the additional fifth.

The repayment is ḥullin.

If the Kohen wishes to waive it, he may waive it.

Mishnah 2

Essentially Literal English

A daughter of a Kohen who married an Israelite and afterward ate terumah pays the principal and does not pay the additional fifth.

And [if she commits adultery while married], her prescribed judicial death penalty is burning.

If she married one of those disqualified for her, she pays principal and fifth, and [if she commits adultery while married] her prescribed judicial death penalty is strangulation —

the words of Rabbi Meir.

And the Sages say:

Both this one and that one pay the principal and do not pay the fifth, and [in the case of adultery while married] their prescribed judicial death penalty is burning.

Rabbi Meir 說:

她支付本金與額外五分之一;

這兩種情況都只支付本金,不支付額外五分之一;

Mishnah 3

Essentially Literal English

One who feeds terumah to his minor children, or to his servants, whether adults or minors;

one who eats terumah from outside the Land;

and one who eats less than an olive-sized amount of terumah —

pays the principal and does not pay the additional fifth.

The repayment is ḥullin.

If the Kohen wishes to waive it, he may waive it.

一個人把 terumah 給自己的未成年子女吃;

或給自己的僕人吃,不論僕人已成年或未成年;

或一個人吃了 Land 之外的 terumah;

Mishnah 4

Essentially Literal English

This is the rule:

Anyone who pays principal and an additional fifth — the repayment is terumah; if the Kohen wishes to waive it, he may not waive it.

Anyone who pays the principal and does not pay the fifth — the repayment is ḥullin; if the Kohen wishes to waive it, he may waive it.

凡需要支付本金與額外五分之一的人,他所交出的補償物成為 terumah;

凡只支付本金、不支付額外五分之一的人,補償物仍然是 ḥullin;

Mishnah 5

Essentially Literal English

There are two baskets, one of terumah and one of ḥullin.

A seah of terumah fell into one of them, and it is not known into which it fell.

I say:

It fell into the basket of terumah.

If it is not known which basket is terumah and which is ḥullin, and one ate one of them, he is exempt.

The second is treated as terumah and is obligated in ḥallah —

the words of Rabbi Meir.

Rabbi Yose exempts it.

If another person ate the second, he is exempt.

If one person ate both, he pays according to the smaller of the two.

Rabbi Yose

Mishnah 6

Essentially Literal English

If one of them fell into ḥullin, it does not render them medumma.

The second is treated as terumah and is obligated in ḥallah —

the words of Rabbi Meir.

Rabbi Yose exempts.

If the second fell into another place, it does not render that mixture medumma.

If both fell into one place, they render it medumma according to the smaller of the two.

Rabbi Yose

Mishnah 7

Essentially Literal English

If he sowed one of them, he is exempt.

The second is treated as terumah and is obligated in ḥallah —

the words of Rabbi Meir.

Rabbi Yose exempts.

If another person sowed the second, he is exempt.

If one person sowed both:

With something whose seed is consumed in its growth, it is permitted.

With something whose seed is not consumed in its growth, it is forbidden.

Rabbi Yose

Mishnah 1

Essentially Literal English

A woman was eating terumah, and people came and said to her:

“Your husband has died,” or, “He divorced you.”

Likewise, a servant was eating terumah, and people came and said to him:

“Your master has died,” or, “He sold you to an Israelite,” or, “He gave you as a gift,” or, “He made you a free person.”

Likewise, a Kohen was eating terumah, and it became known that he was the son of a divorced woman or the son of a ḥalutzah.

Rabbi Eliezer obligates principal and fifth.

Rabbi Yehoshua exempts.

If he was standing and offering sacrifices upon the altar and it became known that he was the son of a divorced woman or the son of a ḥalutzah:

Rabbi Eliezer says:

All the sacrifices he offered upon the altar are invalid.

Rabbi Yehoshua declares them valid.

If it became known that he had a bodily blemish, his service is invalid.

Rabbi Eliezer

Rabbi Yehoshua

Rabbi Eliezer

Rabbi Yehoshua

Mishnah 2

Essentially Literal English

In all these cases, if terumah was already in their mouths:

Rabbi Eliezer says:

They shall swallow it.

Rabbi Yehoshua says:

They shall spit it out.

They said to him:

If he became impure and the terumah also became impure —

Rabbi Eliezer says:

He shall swallow.

Rabbi Yehoshua says:

He shall spit it out.

If he was already impure and the terumah was already impure;

or it became known that what was in his mouth was tevel, first tithe from which its terumah had not been taken, second tithe or consecrated property that had not been redeemed;

or he tasted the taste of a bug in his mouth —

he shall spit it out.

Rabbi Eliezer 說:

Rabbi Yehoshua

Rabbi Eliezer 說:

Rabbi Yehoshua 說:

如果這個人原本就已經不潔淨,而 terumah 原本也已經不潔淨;

或後來發現口中的東西其實是 tevel;

或是尚未取出 terumat ma’aser 的 first tithe;

或尚未贖回的 second tithe 或 consecrated property;

Mishnah 3

Hebrew

Rabbi Eliezer

Rabbi Yehoshua

Mishnah 4

Essentially Literal English

Terumah wine that was left uncovered shall be poured out.

And needless to say, ḥullin wine.

Three liquids are prohibited because of having been left uncovered:

Water, wine, and milk.

All other liquids are permitted.

How long must they have remained uncovered to become prohibited?

Long enough for a creeping creature to come out from a nearby place and drink.

Mishnah 5

Essentially Literal English

The measure of uncovered water is enough that the poison would become lost in it.

Rabbi Yose says:

In vessels, any amount.

In ground reservoirs, forty seahs.

Essentially Literal English

Figs, grapes, kishut, gourds, melons, and melafefon that have been punctured:

Mishnah 7

Essentially Literal English

A barrel of terumah concerning which a doubt of impurity arose:

Rabbi Eliezer says:

If it was placed in an exposed place, he shall put it in a protected place;

if it was uncovered, he shall cover it.

Rabbi Yehoshua says:

if it was covered, he shall uncover it.

Rabban Gamliel says:

He shall make no change concerning it.

Rabbi Eliezer

Rabbi Yehoshua

Rabban Gamliel

Mishnah 9

Essentially Literal English

A barrel broke in the upper winepress, while the lower winepress was impure.

Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Yehoshua agree that if one can save a quarter-log from it in purity, he shall save it.

And if not:

Rabbi Eliezer says:

Let it descend and become impure, but he shall not make it impure with his own hands.

Rabbi Eliezer 說:

讓液體自己流下去而變得不潔淨;

Mishnah 10

Essentially Literal English

And likewise a barrel of oil that spilled:

Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Yehoshua agree that if he can save a quarter-log from it in purity, he shall save it.

And if not:

Rabbi Eliezer says:

Let it descend and be absorbed, but he shall not cause it to be absorbed with his own hands.

Rabbi Eliezer 說:

讓它自己流下並被土地吸收;

Mishnah 11

Essentially Literal English

Concerning both this case and that case, Rabbi Yehoshua said:

This is not the terumah concerning which I am warned against making it impure, but rather against eating it.

And how does the prohibition against making it impure apply?

One was traveling from place to place with loaves of terumah in his hand.

A gentile said to him:

“Give me one of them and I will make it impure; and if not, I will make all of them impure.”

Rabbi Eliezer says:

Let him make all of them impure, but he shall not give him one of them to make impure.

Rabbi Yehoshua says:

He may place one of them before him upon a rock.

這不是我受到命令、必須避免親手使其不潔淨的那種 terumah;

Rabbi Eliezer

Rabbi Yehoshua

Mishnah 12

Essentially Literal English

And likewise, women to whom gentiles said:

“Give us one of you, and we will defile her [sexually violate her]; and if not, we will defile all of you” —

they shall all be defiled rather than hand over one Israelite person to them.

「把你們其中一人交給我們,我們要使她被玷污[即以性暴力侵犯她];

Mishnah

Essentially Literal English

One who sows terumah:

If unintentionally, he shall turn it over.

If intentionally, he shall maintain it.

If it has reached one-third of its growth, whether unintentionally or intentionally, he shall maintain it.

With flax, if intentionally, he shall turn it over.

Mishnah 2

Essentially Literal English

It is obligated in leket, shikheḥah, and peah.

Poor Israelites and poor Kohanim gather them.

Poor Israelites sell what they gathered to Kohanim at the price of terumah, and the money belongs to them.

Rabbi Tarfon says:

Only poor Kohanim shall gather, lest the others forget and put some into their mouths.

Rabbi Akiva said to him:

If so, only those who are pure should gather.

Rabbi Tarfon

Rabbi Akiva

Mishnah 3

Essentially Literal English

It is obligated in tithes and in poor tithe.

Poor Israelites and poor Kohanim take from it.

Poor Israelites sell their portion to Kohanim at the price of terumah, and the money belongs to them.

One who beats out the grain by hand is praiseworthy.

And one who threshes — what shall he do?

He hangs baskets around the necks of the animals and puts into them some of the same species.

Thus he neither muzzles the animal nor feeds it terumah.

這樣既沒有 muzzle the animal,不讓牠在工作時吃東西;

Mishnah 4

Essentially Literal English

What grows from terumah is terumah.

What grows from the growth of terumah is ḥullin.

But tevel, first tithe, aftergrowth of the seventh year, terumah from outside the Land, medumma, and first fruits:

What grows from them is ḥullin.

What grows from consecrated property and second tithe is ḥullin, and he redeems them at the value of their seed.

但是 tevel、first tithe、第七年的自生作物、Land 之外的 terumah、medumma,以及 first fruits:

從 consecrated property 與 second tithe 種出的作物也是 ḥullin;

Mishnah 5

Essentially Literal English

One hundred garden beds of terumah and one of ḥullin:

All are permitted when it is something whose seed is consumed in its growth.

But with something whose seed is not consumed in its growth:

Even one hundred of ḥullin and one of terumah — all are forbidden.

Mishnah 6

Essentially Literal English

Tevel:

Its growth is permitted when it is something whose seed is consumed in its growth.

But with something whose seed is not consumed in its growth, even the growth of the growth is forbidden.

What is something whose seed is not consumed?

Such as lof, garlic, and onions.

Rabbi Yehudah says:

Garlic is like barley.

Tevel

Rabbi Yehudah

Mishnah 7

Rabbi Yehudah says:

Until he cuts it off and it grows again.

Terumah

把它們重新種入土地後,它們會失去原先傳遞 impurity 的狀態;

Rabbi Yehudah

Essentially Literal English

An onion that was put into lentils:

If it is whole, it is permitted.

If it was cut, the rule depends on whether it imparts flavor.

With every other cooked dish, whether the onion is whole or cut, the rule depends on whether it imparts flavor.

Rabbi Yehudah permits it in tzahanah, because it is there only to remove the unpleasant odor.

Essentially Literal English

Fenugreek

Mishnah 6

Essentially Literal English

One who had bundles of fenugreek that were kilayim of the vineyard:

They shall be burned.

If he had bundles of fenugreek that were tevel:

He crushes them and calculates how much seed is in them, and separates according to the seed; he need not separate according to the stalk.

Once he has separated, he shall not say:

“I will crush it, take the stalk for myself, and give the seed.”

Rather, he gives the stalk together with the seed.

把它搗碎,計算其中有多少種子,並按照種子的份量完成分取;

Rabbi Tzadok

End of Masechet Terumot

繼續閱讀 Talmud/Mishnah 直譯系列

傳統解釋將這裡的 sheminit 理解為 one-eighth of a log,因此本文在 English 加上 [of a log],中文則提示為一個 log 的六十四分之一。
